In a series of verbal gaffes during the USA's Independence Day celebrations,
President Joe Biden mistakenly claimed he was the "first black woman to serve with a black president."
This error came a week after a difficult debate with Donald Trump,
where Biden mixed up his role with that of
Vice President Kamala Harris during an interview with Philadelphia's WURD radio station.
"By the way,
I’m proud to be, as I said, the first vice-president,
first black woman… to serve with a black president,"
Biden said, confusing his own tenure as vice-president under Barack Obama.
Both Obama and Harris made history,
with Obama elected as the first black president in
2008 and Harris as the first black and female vice-president in 2020.
Earlier in the interview, Biden correctly mentioned appointing Harris and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson,
the first black woman on the Supreme Court.
Biden appeared uncertain on The Earl Ingram Show,
discussing the Supreme Court’s decision that he said threatened the American principle of
equality under the law.
"You need someone, someone who is going to make sure that –
the Supreme Court just issued a decision, by the way,
that threatens the American principle that we have no kings in America.
There’s no one above the law," he said.
Earlier, while speaking to military families,
Biden, 81, stumbled again, referring to Trump as “one of our colleagues”
and stating he was “not going anywhere.”
These gaffes have increased pressure on Biden to step aside as the Democratic presidential candidate,
with concerns growing about his ability to defeat Trump in November.
Defenders note Biden's long history of verbal slips,
but his performance in the recent debate raised further doubts about his readiness for another term.
Despite declining public support,
Biden insisted to Democratic governors that he could beat Trump and sought their backing.
However, reports indicated Biden told them he needed more rest and fewer hours,
avoiding events after 8 pm.
While some Democrats have called for Biden to step aside,
most are waiting for detailed battleground state polls to gauge his support.
Biden will face more scrutiny in an upcoming interview with ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos
and plans a news conference during the NATO summit in Washington next week.
